Newport City Council responds to calls for ‘dirty’ footbridge to be cleaned

The ‘filthy’ footbridge needs to be cleaned before the Newport County game, according to requests made to the NEWPORT City Council.

The city center footbridge was recently dubbed “stinking dirty” by a Newport campaigner, who also demanded that the council clean it.

Conservative campaigner Michael Enea has called attention to the City Centre bridge, which leads to the Rodney Parade stadium in Newport County. He claims that the bridge is covered with “grime, algae, and moss.”

On Saturday, Newport County will host Doncaster Rovers for their home opener of the new football season. Mr. Enea is concerned about the impression that the bridge’s condition would give the fans traveling from south Yorkshire.

“Welcoming people to Newport should be an honor,” stated Mr. Enea.

But what must rugby and football fans from other countries be thinking as they cross the footbridge in Newport’s City Centre?

“First impressions matter. The bridge has a heavy layer of black muck, algae, and moss covering it, and it actually stinks. It is repulsive.

“Unfortunately, the company we had appointed to carry out the work was unable to start the work before it subsequently withdrew from the process,” a Newport City Council representative stated.

Therefore, it was necessary to retendered the work. We intend to be able to hire someone very soon and are now analyzing the cleaning program tender bids.

When a start date is set, we’ll notify the locals. We’ll also notify them of any potential delays to utilizing the bridge while the work is being done.

“The council has pledged to increase funding for upkeep. A cabinet suggestion to add £700,000 to our budget for maintaining our property assets and highways was approved by council members as part of the budget proposals for 2024–2025.
