An Olympic basketball record is broken by a Mavericks player.

The 2024 Olympic campaign for Team Canada did not go as planned after their Tuesday 82-73 loss to France. But center Dwight Powell of the Dallas Mavericks, who also represents Canada, pulled off an amazing feat. According to the Dallas Mavericks on X, formerly Twitter, the experienced center for the Mavericks became the all-time leader in field goal % for the Olympics.

Powell’s shots typically revolve around the hoop. It’s still a remarkable accomplishment. Powell made 90% of his shots at the Summer Olympics in 2024, missing only one in total out of his ten attempts.

In the end, Powell scored 6.5 points per game on average. Every game, he added 5.8 rebounds. Powell showed that he still has the capacity to have an impact when given the chance to play with the Mavs in 2023–24, despite not playing many minutes.

Powell has already made reference to trade speculations. But he has been a member of the Mavs since the 2014–15 campaign. Even though he does not play a lot of minutes on average, his leadership is valuable to Dallas.

With Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II expected to lead the way at the center position in 2024–2025—that probably won’t change. Lively has an All-Star ceiling at just 20 years old, while Gafford is a reliable presence at the position.

Powell played in 63 games (2023–24; nine starts) and averaged 13.3 minutes per game. In those games, he scored 3.3 points per contest.

Once more, Powell won’t have a major impact on the Mavs’ success this season. However, Dallas will not ignore the fact that there is a guy on the roster who has been with the franchise for nearly ten years. Powell is aware of the demands of playing in Dallas. One of the most crucial components of a winning team is team chemistry.
