Austin, TX — The University of Texas community is draped in burnt orange sorrow today as the Texas Longhorns mourn the passing of beloved former coach and athletic legend, Coach Bobby “Ironheart” Daniels, who died at age 72 after a brief illness.
Daniels, who led the Longhorns football program through one of its most storied decades from 1995 to 2005, was credited with shaping the team’s fierce defensive identity and mentoring countless athletes who went on to successful NFL careers. Known for his gravelly voice, tough-love coaching, and unwavering loyalty to his players, Daniels was a fixture on the sidelines, often seen with his signature white Stetson and Longhorns pullover.
Current head coach Travis Ward issued a heartfelt statement: “We’ve lost a giant today. Coach Daniels was more than a leader — he was family. His passion, his integrity, and his love for the game shaped this program forever.”
The university announced plans for a public memorial at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium next week, inviting fans, alumni, and former players to celebrate Daniels’ life and legacy. As tributes pour in from across the country, the Longhorns community unites in grief, remembering the man who embodied Texas pride.
