In a heartbreaking incident aboard the Carnival Valor cruise ship, a pregnant woman and her young daughter reportedly fell overboard late Monday evening, sparking a massive search-and-rescue operation in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to initial reports, the ship had just departed from New Orleans on a five-day Caribbean itinerary when the tragedy occurred. Fellow passengers say they heard commotion near the ship’s railing on Deck 10, followed by panicked shouts as crew members rushed to the scene.
Carnival Cruise Line released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident, confirming that ship personnel immediately launched search protocols and notified the U.S. Coast Guard. The names of the victims have not been released pending family notification.
“The safety of our guests is our top priority,” the company’s spokesperson said. “We are fully cooperating with authorities and offering support to the family and those affected.”
Coast Guard crews, including helicopters and rescue vessels, scoured the surrounding waters through the night, but as of Tuesday morning, no trace of the woman or child had been found.
Passengers onboard described a somber mood, with many gathering in prayer vigils. Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the fall.
