May 20, 2025 — A terrifying incident unfolded early Tuesday when a thunderbolt struck a luxury cruise ship operated by OceanVista Cruises, carrying over 3,000 passengers and crew members. The strike occurred around 3:45 AM local time, while the ship was navigating through a stormy patch of the Caribbean Sea, approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Jamaica.

According to initial reports from OceanVista Cruises, the lightning strike hit the upper deck of the vessel, causing momentary power outages and triggering emergency protocols. No fatalities have been reported, but several passengers experienced panic attacks and minor injuries while rushing to safety zones.

“We were all woken up by this blinding flash and a deafening sound. People screamed and ran in all directions,” said Amanda Reeves, a passenger from Florida.

The ship’s automated safety systems and crew responded swiftly, restoring power and calming frightened guests within minutes. Medical teams onboard treated those affected, while communication was established with mainland authorities.

OceanVista Cruises confirmed the ship has since resumed its course, with safety inspections ongoing. An internal investigation has been launched, and weather-related route adjustments are being considered for the remainder of the journey.
