Tragic Incident Aboard MSC Virtuosa: Passenger Dies Following Onboard Altercation in British Waters

Today May 18, 2025, a tragic incident occurred aboard the MSC Virtuosa during a short voyage from Southampton to Bruges, Belgium. James Messham, a 60-year-old grandfather from Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, died following an altercation on the ship while it was still in British waters. The vessel had departed Southampton around 6:00 AM and was approximately two and a half hours into its journey when the incident took place.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter, Devon, on suspicion of murder upon the ship’s return to Southampton. He was later released pending further investigation. Subsequently, a second man, aged 56 from Richmond, London, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and remains in custody.

Messham was well-known for operating “Messham’s Wall of Death,” a family-run motorcycle stunt attraction with a 90-year history. Friends and family have paid tribute to him, describing him as a “great showman” and expressing deep sorrow over his untimely death.

MSC Cruises has expressed profound sadness over the incident and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. The company is also providing support to those affected by this tragedy.

Authorities are appealing to passengers who may have witnessed the altercation or have relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
