Tragedy struck  as the Carnival Splendor, carrying approximately 4,200 passengers and crew, capsized off the southeastern coast of Brazil near the city of Santos. The ship was en route from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires when it encountered sudden, violent weather and rough seas.

Eyewitnesses aboard described panic as the vessel began to tilt dramatically before rolling over. Alarms were sounded, but many passengers were caught off guard as furniture and fixtures shifted violently. Some were thrown into the water, while others rushed to lifeboats amid the chaos.

Brazilian Navy and Coast Guard forces responded swiftly, launching a large-scale rescue operation. As of the latest update, over 1,000 people have been rescued and are being treated at nearby ports and hospitals. Sadly, at least 200 passengers are feared dead, and many remain missing.

Carnival Cruise Line issued a statement expressing “deep sorrow and shock” over the incident and confirmed full cooperation with Brazilian authorities. Investigations are underway to determine what caused the ship to capsize so rapidly.

This disaster ranks among the worst in recent cruise history and has shocked the global maritime community.
