Hundreds of Carnival Cruise passengers were left stunned and stranded in pitch black after a sudden power failure plunged the entire ship into darkness for over four hours in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Carnival Spirit was on Day 4 of a 7-day Bahamas voyage when, just after 10:30 p.m., the lights flickered

then went out completely. Elevators stalled, air conditioning shut down, and passengers described “complete silence and confusion” as they stumbled through the dark corridors.

“It felt like a scene from Titanic,” said Lisa Monroe, a honeymooner from Chicago. “The lights went out, and everyone just froze. You couldn’t even see your hand in front of your face.”

Emergency lights eventually kicked in, but with limited crew communication and no clear updates, rumors began to spread from engine room fires to hacker attacks.

Carnival later confirmed the outage was due to a “critical systems malfunction” and assured that backup power kept navigation systems online. However, many guests say the response was slow and disorganized.

Food service halted, pools closed, and several passengers required medical attention after tripping in stairwells.

The power was restored after 4 hours, but questions remain about the ship’s aging infrastructure and emergency protocols.

“We paid for paradise not panic,” one angry guest tweeted, tagging Carnival’s official account.

As Carnival investigates the incident, travel experts warn the cruise line may face legal and financial backlash — especially with multiple recent controversies still fresh in the public’s mind.
