May 15, 2025 – Port Richey, Florida | 2:45 PM EST
Tragedy struck off the coast of Port Richey this afternoon when a Florida-based casino boat operated by Tropical Breeze Casino Cruises caught fire just minutes after setting sail. The vessel, carrying over 50 passengers and crew, was quickly engulfed in thick black smoke and flames, triggering a frantic evacuation.
According to Pasco County authorities, the fire broke out around 2:45 PM local time, shortly after the boat departed from the dock. Eyewitnesses describe chaotic scenes as passengers, some in formal attire, were forced to jump into the chilly waters of the Gulf to escape the rapidly spreading blaze.
Rescue teams arrived swiftly, pulling dozens from the water and providing emergency medical treatment onshore. Sadly, one woman, identified as a 56-year-old resident of Tampa, was later pronounced dead at Bayonet Point Medical Center due to complications from smoke inhalation and cardiac arrest. Several others were treated for minor injuries and hypothermia.
The U.S. Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, and Carnival’s affiliate operator, Tropical Breeze Casino, has yet to release a formal statement.
Witnesses reported no initial warning signs, raising urgent questions about the vessel’s safety protocols and emergency preparedness.
Federal safety inspectors are expected on site by evening. This marks the second fire-related incident involving a Florida-based gambling cruise in the last five years, fueling renewed concerns over the oversight of such operations.
