- Carnival Cruise Ship catch’s fire in middle of the sea Investigators Scramble to Find the cause
Panic swept across the Caribbean Sea this morning as a Carnival Cruise ship was suddenly overtaken by thick smoke, forcing passengers into a frantic evacuation and triggering a multi-agency investigation.
The vessel, identified as the Carnival Radiance, was mid-voyage when passengers reported smelling burning plastic and seeing dense smoke pouring from the upper decks. Within minutes, emergency alarms rang out as guests scrambled to grab life vests and flee their cabins.
“We couldn’t see more than a few feet — it felt like we were trapped inside a burning building,” said Anna Reid, a schoolteacher from New Jersey vacationing with her children.
At least 19 guests were treated for smoke inhalation, and three were airlifted in critical condition to a nearby hospital in San Juan. The exact source of the smoke remains unclear, though it is believed to have started near the ship’s midsection.
The U.S. Coast Guard, FBI, and international maritime safety authorities have launched a full investigation. Officials say they’re reviewing everything from electrical faults to sabotage — nothing is off the table.
This is the third serious safety incident Carnival has faced in less than 24 months, raising alarm among travel watchdogs and former passengers alike.
“These aren’t isolated,” said cruise safety expert Tom Kellan. “Something’s wrong behind the scenes, and it’s time Carnival answers for it.”
Carnival has not issued an official cause but has promised full cooperation and support for all affected passengers.
As the Carnival Radiance limps back to port under tow, one question hangs in the salty air:
What really happened out there and could it happen again?
