BREAKING NEWS: Yangtze River Cruise Disaster Final Count — 442 Dead, Only 12 Survivors Confirmed

BEIJING — The death toll from the Eastern Star cruise ship tragedy on China’s Yangtze River has reached 442, with just 12 survivors officially confirmed, according to state media over the weekend.

The vessel capsized on June 1 during a sudden and violent storm while navigating through Hubei province, with 454 people on board. All previously missing individuals have now been accounted for, as search teams completed recovery operations.

Initial reports had listed 14 survivors, but authorities have corrected the number after discovering duplicate entries in early counts. “Various government departments conducted multiple tallies of survivors, which resulted in the miscalculation,” explained Tang Guanjun, head of the Yangtze River Navigation Affairs Administration, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

A dedicated team of 60 investigators is now reviewing the circumstances surrounding the disaster, including the ship’s preparedness and the emergency response.

The Eastern Star incident stands as one of the worst maritime accidents in modern Chinese history. As grieving families continue to seek answers, officials have pledged a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the factors that led to the ship’s devastating capsizing.
