Carnival Cruise Line has been rocked by yet another troubling incident—this time aboard the Carnival Freedom. In March 2025, while sailing near the Bahamas, a fire broke out in the ship’s exhaust funnel, sending plumes of smoke into the sky and causing a portion of the iconic whale-tail funnel to collapse onto the deck below.
Though no passengers were harmed, two crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation. Thanks to swift action by the crew, the blaze was quickly contained, but the structural damage was significant.
The ship has since been taken out of service for repairs, forcing the cancellation of multiple upcoming voyages and disrupting plans for thousands of guests. Carnival has issued a public apology and is offering full refunds and future cruise credits to affected passengers.
This marks the latest in a string of operational mishaps for Carnival, intensifying scrutiny over its safety protocols and maintenance standards. As investigators probe the cause of the fire, questions are mounting over how such an incident occurred—and whether deeper issues are at play beneath the surface.
