Michael Stewart Attacks VAR Following the Divisive Celtic vs. St. Mirren Call

Another weekend, another VAR dispute, and this time, the verdict went against St Mirren.

Alistair Johnston seemed to foul a Buddies player in the box late in the game, with the score at 3-2, giving Celtic a huge penalty shout during their 5-2 victory over St Mirren in Paisley. But VAR did not step in, and the referee let play on.

The decision left BBC pundit Michael Stewart perplexed, and he acknowledged that he was “laughing” at the contradiction. “I’m just giggling. It’s insane. You witnessed the penalty kick that was used in the first half. However, that involved greater contact, and I’m at a loss for words. Stewart stated on Sportscene, “I don’t understand why VAR hasn’t looked at it.”

According to Sky Sports host Eilidh Barbour, VAR reviewed the incident but determined that Johnston had made sufficient contact with the ball prior to the challenge. Clubs and supporters are once again becoming frustrated and doubting the reliability of VAR in Scotland. Many would contend that even though the clubs are paying for the technology, they are not benefiting from it. It’s time to reconsider VAR.

Although Stephen Robinson, the manager of St Mirren, was clearly irritated after the game, Celtic’s deeper squad ultimately defeated his team when Brendan Rodgers’ team withdrew in the last minutes. However, if they had been given that penalty and leveled the score, the outcome might have been completely different.
