The Wigan cut the former Celtic and Aston Villa player down south.
A former star of Aston Villa and Celtic has been fired as manager of Wigan Athletic in England. Shaun Maloney, who joined at the end of the 21–22 season, has prior managerial experience with Hibs. In 2023, he returned to the dugout at Wigan, where he won the FA Cup as a player, after being binned in April 2022. Even though his first season ended in relegation, he brought stability to a League One team that was losing eight points. The team is only six points above the relegation zone in the third division after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Reading, and that has been too far.
Maloney won five trophies as a guy in Hoops and played for Celtic for two periods. His tenure with the team are interspersed with time spent with Aston Villa, where former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill reportedly paid £1 million for him at the time. He is replaced by Glenn Whelan, a former Aston Villa player who will fill in as a caretaker.
Wigan Athletic can confirm that Shaun Maloney has left his position as Wigan Athletic Manager with immediate effect, according to a statement from the club. Shaun was hired in January 2023, during a very turbulent time in the club’s history, and although he was unable to stop the club’s relegation from the EFL Championship, he made sure the team returned to the third division with a strong fight.
Additionally, Shaun remained with the Club through a change of ownership in the summer of 2023, helping us to overcome an eight-point deduction and a squad revamp to comfortably maintain our 2023–24 League One status with games remaining. A few of the proud moments that Shaun and his youthful team have brought to the Club and its supporters throughout his stay include three historic wins over rivals Bolton Wanderers and an Emirates FA Cup Third Round matchup with Manchester United.
To the mutual advantage of the Football Club, Shaun has also assisted in the development of several of our young players, some of whom have gone on to pursue professions in other fields. It is impossible to ignore, though, that the current League One season has obviously not gone as planned. Specifically, home performances and outcomes have fallen short of the expectations of our followers and have been disappointing. The Board believed that a change was necessary because of this.
The timing of this move will provide the club the time it needs to select a successor and prepare for the future. Max Rogers, the assistant manager of Wigan Athletic, has also left. The appointment of a new Wigan Athletic Manager starts right now. Glenn Whelan, the first team coach, will lead the first team in the interim with assistance from Frankie Bunn, the lead PDP coach, and Club Ambassador and former manager and assistant manager Graham Barrow.
“The Board of Directors would like to formally thank Shaun and Max for their service, hard work, and commitment to the Club. We hope that, like his time as a player for the club, Shaun’s tenure as manager will be cherished by fans in the years to come. Shaun and Max will always be welcomed back to Wigan Athletic Football Club and the Brick Community Stadium.”
