After a thrilling match in which both teams blew fantastic opportunities to take the lead before the substitute’s game-winning goal in the 95th minute, Auckland moved back above Adelaide United to the top of the Isuzu UTE A-League standings.
In Wanderers defender Jack Clisby’s 250th Isuzu UTE A-League match, Western Sydney had 15 shots to Auckland’s 22, but five minutes of extra time passed with the score still tied at 0-0 thanks to a combination of excellent goalkeeping by Lawrence Thomas and Alex Paulsen and both teams’ wastefulness in the final third.
However, as Auckland swept back to the top of the Isuzu UTE A-League table, Moreno’s narrowly angled strike went over Wanderers keeper Lawrence Thomas’ head, off the bar, and over the line just before the final whistle.
Moreno’s outstanding form and effectiveness off the bench for Auckland were maintained in Sunday’s victory over the Wanderers.
Moreno has made the most of his 477 minutes on the field despite starting just four of his 12 games this season.
His game-winning goal against Western Sydney took his season total to four goals, which he shares with Guillermo May as the most of any Auckland player.

Moreno has played the fewest minutes of any Auckland player with two goals or more this season, and by some margin.
In terms of minutes played, Moreno is one of the league’s most effective goal scorers; Marcus Antonsson of Western Sydney, who has four goals in 479 minutes of action, and Adelaide’s Archie Goodwin and Luka Jovanovic, who have six goals in 650 minutes and four goals in 466 minutes, respectively, have also been outstanding.
In addition to his goal against Newcastle Jets in the 83rd minute and his goal against Adelaide United in the 66th, Moreno has scored two of his four goals to far in the 95th minute against Western Sydney and Melbourne City.
