In the summer, Bolton Wanderers loaned the midfield player to League Two team Accrington Stanley. He is expected to play for the Lancashire team for the entire season.
The 22-year-old Khumbeni has drawn attention while playing for John Doolan’s team. He has made 23 appearances across all competitions and contributed one goal. They are now five points above the relegation zone and in 19th position in the rankings.
According to a story by The Bolton News, Evatt stated in his most recent update on his circumstances: “There is interest in Nelson – some permanent and some loan.” Once more, throughout the course of the upcoming week, we will have discussions behind the scenes to determine what is best for both of us.
The deadline for the Trotters to complete any incoming or exiting business is the end of the January transfer window.
Bolton Wanderers have a decision to make on what to do next with Khumbeni.
As Evatt alluded to, there is both ‘permanent’ and ‘loan’ interest in him from other teams. The identity of his suitors is yet to be known at this stage.
It would be a big blow for Accrington Stanley if he was to leave them this month as he has been a key player.
The Malawi-born man rose up through the academy at Norwich City and was a regular for the Canaries at various different youth levels.
Khumbeni was handed his first professional deal at Carrow Road in 2021 but didn’t make a senior appearance for the Championship side.
He was snapped up by Bolton Wanderers in 2022 when his deal in East Anglia expired and he initially linked up with their B team.
Prior to his switch to Accrington Stanley, he had spells away from the Trotters at AFC Fylde and Morecambe to boost his development.
Khumbeni played 18 matches for the latter last term as they finished in 15th place in the fourth tier.
He has played twice for Bolton Wanderers’ first-team and has scored two goals.
Khumbeni’s future is up in the air right now and it remains to be seen whether he will be staying put at Accrington Stanley.
Bolton Wanderers will be weighing up what is best for him at the moment.
The Trotters are back in action this weekend against Rotherham United away.
