The clubs have reached an agreement for Welsh to join for the rest of the season, therefore it is anticipated that the 24-year-old center-back would sign with KV Mechelen.
Welsh has long been admired by Mechelen, who attempted to sign the goalkeeper in the summer but were unsuccessful.
However, Celtic has recently determined that Welsh can be granted a temporary departure in order to gain more playing time in the first team after falling down the Parkhead hierarchy.
Liam Scales, Auston Trusty, and Cameron Carter-Vickers are all far ahead of Welsh for starting positions in Brendan Rodgers’ squad. According to reports, Rodgers is aware of Welsh’s desire to play in the first team and does not want to impede his progress.
However, Welsh still has time left on his contract at Celtic and will return to the club at the end of the season with no buy option included in the loan move.
It’s hoped the deal could see Welsh’s value stabilise through proving his worth in a first-team environment in the Belgian top flight.
Celtic, meanwhile, have some cover in the defensive areas with Dane Murray recalled from his loan at Queens Park and Maik Nawrocki in the building at Parkhead.
